On average, about 17,000 people in Slovakia suffer from stroke each year.

Slovaks do not know the symptoms of stroke and seek medical help late, which also leads to higher mortality. It is twice as common as a heart attack. Every twelfth woman and every eleventh man will die of a stroke. In other words, every tenth Slovak.

The primary goal is to restore walking, practice self-sufficiency, and provide speech therapy and psychological care to help patients cope with their disability.

The most common consequences of a stroke include varying degrees of paralysis of the limbs, face, sensory impairment, swallowing, speech, etc. Approximately 50% of those who survive a stroke have permanent neurological deficits and more than 25% are permanently dependent on family members or long-term care in social and health facilities.

Stroke is an economic and social problem even today, when professional care is timely and of a good standard. In recent decades, mainly in developed countries of the world and in Western Europe, the incidence of stroke has decreased, mainly as a result of targeted campaigns and work in the field of prevention, diagnosis and treatment. Despite these measures, a high number of cases of this disease persists, which also affects younger age groups. In the world, a person dies every 6 seconds from the consequences of a stroke.
